Our client, a nonprofit organization in Greater Portland, is seeking an experienced Director of Finance.  This position is open due to retirement.

The Director of Finance is responsible for the coordination of the financial administration and functions of the organization. It is both a hands-on operational role with recurring duties and a supporting strategic role contributing analysis and forecasts that inform the strategic objectives of the organization.
What the Director of Finance is doing:
• Manages day-to-day financial accounting and lease renewal activities through a skilled and knowledgeable decision-making process.
• Maintains a current accounting procedures and lease renewals manual.
• Oversees cash management, billing and internal controls:
• Oversees lease renewal activities, 30-day notices and move-out scheduling performed by the Accounting and Leasing Coordinator/s. Knowledgeable about the organization’s Tenant Selection Plan and stays current on HUD regulatory guidance impacting the lease renewal process.
• Track rent taxes and update monthly rent payment worksheets for HUD, Independent Living, and Assisted Living.
• Produces/provides timely analyses and reports to CEO, Leadership Team, Trustees, Lenders, Auditors and other stakeholders including:
• Acts as primary coordinator of financial statements audit, MaineCare cost report preparation, MaineCare payment audits and Form 990 including preparation of requested schedules and reports.
• Oversees and manages budget preparations and upload into accounting system:
• Maintains account records in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and the organization’s policies
• Oversees recording of fixed asset purchases and disposals by Finance Assistant and provides report to auditors
• Provides direction and guidance in day-to-day accounting activities to Financial Assistant and Accounting and Leasing Coordinator/s
• Participates in the development of the organization’s overall strategic objectives and program initiatives in relation to Finances.
• Prepares agenda, prepares reports and attends all Board of Trustees Finance Committee Meetings with Board Treasurer and CEO. Attends and provides support as needed for all regular meetings of the Board of Trustees.
• Must be able to interact with management, co-workers and residents/guests in a courteous and respectful manner.
• Responsible for answering questions and providing information to staff, residents and family members as needed, including participation in quarterly resident forums and other formal public written and verbal communications.
Successful candidates will have:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience with 3+  years of experience in related nonprofit field preferred. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience with accounting software.
Effective interpersonal, written and oral communications skills. Must be proficient in English and able to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
